I’ve always loved nice nails. Today I’ve had them painted purple.
Having had horses in my life from my early twenties for the following quarter century, I knew what having broken chipped nails at the end of chapped hands felt like. It wasn’t girly. They were the hands of hard work.
But I welcome the me-time I give myself these days. The horses have gone and the stables are now home to swallow-mess covered broken bicycles, once or twice used scooters, sledges, sticks and deflated rugby balls. The ghosts of a time that is in the past.
Now my daughter lives in London and does not ride.
My son enjoys and drives his Land Rover to mates’, to girlfriends; no time for a bicycle ride to hunt for geocaches.
We made a home-gym in one of the stables. My son built it himself. I passed him pieces as he studied the instructions (he was the only 5 year old who would religiously follow instructions which came with lego). I purposely kept my mouth shut as he worked out the pieces, then cursed and changed his mind when something wouldn’t pull through…. humans learn best when they do things for themselves.
I watch him and his father discuss farming, vehicles, life. Sometimes I can feel my husband’s desperate need for his experience to be ‘heard’ hanging in the air like fog, so keen is he to save that son from making ‘silly’ mistakes.
It reminds me of my parents’ approach “do as I say” … “why?” … “because I said so.”
I must re-open that stable door and re-kindle my affair with the ‘gym’ … I think the onset of spring will help with those nuggets of plans.
Blue hair time again ๐ I am happy to be back in London. It is where I left to ‘be a country wife’ and I’ve done a great job.
I am not going to apologise for needing a little bit of this London scene to appear in my world on occasions – and I’m delighted you are here with me โบ๏ธ
(Even the Queen shares my love for blues and purples, did you notice? I keep exceptional company)
Simplify my life …. while enjoying the writing journey. I think that is the way forward this year. I really want to listen to the meditation app I downloaded … but I can’t find my new Bluetooth earphones ๐

“It reminds me of my parentsโ approach โdo as I sayโ โฆ โwhy?โ โฆ โbecause I said so.โ
We are clearly related.
But If I painted my nails purple now, my 90 year old mother would disown me.
I am leaving here now to buy purple polish on Amazon.

Good girl – go do it!!!
My dad ALWAYS used to say โbecause I said soโ … when I asked โwhy?โ … usually followed by a grin because he knew he had the upper hand…
makes my skin crawl even now!!
